CUPE COMMENDS MINIMUM WAGE HIKE
SASKATOON: CUPE Saskatchewan President Tom Graham is commending the department of labour for today's minimum wage announcement.
Within two years, Saskatchewan residents are going to make a minimum of $9.25 per hour, and can expect for that wage to continue to keep up to the Low Income Cut Off Line.
"When you work eight hours a day, you don't deserve to go hungry. You don't deserve to have your children go without heat in the winter," said Graham. "This announcement means that the department of labour agrees with those statements; they agree that our people are valuable resources."
Graham also noted that with the booming Saskatchewan economy, everyone should benefit. "Businesses are growing and our population is growing. We're a 'have' province now, and that should benefit everyone. They're setting high standards here and telling our workers, our business owners and the rest of the country that we, in Saskatchewan, value our people."
CUPE represents 27,000 public sector workers in Saskatchewan who work at health care facilities, municipalities, school boards, universities, libraries and community-based organizations.
