December 6 - National Day of Remembrance and Action On Violence Against Women

[Nov 29, 2007 11:37 AM]

December 6 is National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada.

On December 6, 1989, 14 women were killed at L'Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal. They died because they were women. In 1991 the Parliament of Canada established this date as a National Day of Remembrance.

Violence is a daily reality for many women and girls. It is the reality for young women involved in the sex trade and those women suffering abuse in the home. On December 6, remember those missing and taken women; leaving families separated from mothers, aunts, sisters, daughters.

We remember.

In many communities throughout Canada, vigils and marches will take place to mark this anniversary.  We remember those who died. We also pledge our support to those women and girls who suffer from violence because of their gender. We take our message to those in other countries who live a similar existence of violence. And, wherever we can, we will work for change and vow to eradicate violence in all its forms against women.

Please remember with us those who died, those who suffer and those who are missing. Please join a vigil or march in your community on December 6.
