Members showed their unanimous confidence in president Tom Graham on March 11 when delegates to the annual provincial convention acclaimed Graham to another term.
On accepting the only nomination for the role of president, Graham quieted thunderous applause to tell delegates “it’s time to get back to work.”
A Ministry of Education program which threatens to devastate special needs students and result in job loss for hundreds of Educational Assistants; and 12,600 health care workers still struggling to get a fair contract negotiated were issues at the fore of this week’s convention.
“We’ve got a fight on our hands,” said Graham. “Our provincial government is trying to cut corners in vital places like education and health care to help cover the massive deficit they’ve created. The delegates to our convention have told our leadership, loud and clear, that CUPE’s 29,000 members in Saskatchewan won’t stand for financial cuts being made on the backs of students, patients or working people.”
Also elected to another term on Thursday was CUPE Saskatchewan`s Secretary-Treasurer, Judy Henley.
Graham is a municipal worker employed by the City of Saskatoon, while Henley is a health care worker in the Sunrise health region.
CUPE Saskatchewan's 45th Annual Convnention wrapped up on March 12.
